5 Destinations You Must Visit in Mexico #01: Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is an ancient Mayan city located north of the Yucatan Peninsula. Chichen Itza is popular for its architecture and mysticism. People perceive Chichen Itza as a big ancient religious center from the structures.

The 9-stepped pyramid temple of Kukulkan is a notable feature of Chichen Itza. However, on the summer equinox, something worthy of note happens. The sun casts a shadow of inverted triangles on the northern stairway of the Kukulkan temple. These triangles form a feathered serpent shadow figure.

History shows that the natives at that time had a broad understanding of astronomy, physics, and so on. The people also used a calendar close to the precision of the Gregorian calendar. Until today, the natives believe the Serpent god descends on the Pyramid twice yearly.

About 300m away from the temple of Kukulkan is the sacred Cenote. Cenotes are large sinkholes that are entrances to underground caves and rivers. Natives conducted rituals in honor of the gods of the terrain in this sacred Cenote. They believe the Cenotes connect them to the underworld.

On your tour of Chichen Itza, you should visit the great ball court located northwest of the complex. It is one of the biggest ancient ball courts, and the builders built the court in the shape of ‘I.’
