The Ghost Town of Mineral de Pozos
Once a prosperous mining town, Mineral de Pozos was eventually abandoned after the mining boom was over thus gaining a reputation of being a Ghost Town. Eventually, it was re-settled only to be abandoned yet again during the Mexican Revolution.
Today, twice reborn, Mineral de Pozos is one of Mexico’s Pueblos Magicos (Magical Towns) and tourist is starting to boom although it is still fairly deserted. I mean, when I walked its super safe streets at night for a second I thought I was in the set of a Zombie Apocalypse movie!
That being said, Mineral de Pozos is an awesome destination for those seeking to live alternative experiences, and here’s some of the best things to do and see in Mineral de Pozos! Enjoy!!!
The 5 Best Thing to Do and See in Mineral de Pozos
Walk Down the Historical Center of Mineral de Pozos
The Historical Center of Mineral de Pozos is fairly small (then again, the entire town of Mineral de Pozos is fairly small) but you can see some beautiful buildings there.
The white church is specially very pretty and the area around it has some very cool doors to take some classic Doors of Instagram photos.
It won’t take you more than one hour to walk through the entire Mineral de Pozos town but luckily there are some very cool activities that you can do around it.
Visit the Lush Lavender Fields
A few minutes drive outside of Mineral de Pozos you shall find some lush lavender fields that are perfect for photo lovers.
Sure, they aren’t as impressive as the ones found in France but come on, you won’t ever find a more beautiful lavender field in Mexico.
Entrance fee is 25 MXN and you’re free to stay as long as you want taking that perfect IG shot!
Go Inside a Mine at Los Hornos in Santa Brigida
The name of the town, Mineral de Pozos, is because of the many mines that are located around the area. None of them are currently active although you can visit them for a small fee.
The most popular one is the mine located at Santa Brigida (a 15-minute drive from Mineral de Pozos) where you can find these three photogenic furnaces (called Los Hornos).
The mine itself (entrance fee 50 MXN) is very dark so definitely not for the claustrophobics!
Relax at the Unique Beer Spa in Mineral de Pozos
At La Casona Minera Boutique Hotel (more about that later in the article), you can find a very unique spa that takes its inspiration from Europe: the beer spa.
Here you can take a relaxing bath in beer (with options of choosing wine or lavender instead) to smoothen your skin and improve your energy levels.
The best part? You can actually try out their locally crafted artisanal beer too!
Take Some Vintage-Style Photos
In many aspects, Mineral de Pozos is a town that is basically frozen in time so if you ever dreamed about photographing the Mexico of olden times, this is your chance.
Because of the “Pueblo Magico” denomination, homeowners are forbidden from radically altering the outside of their houses so Mineral de Pozos remains true to its 19-20th Century architecture.
Plus, who doesn’t want a classic photo with a Mexican vocho (Volkswagen Beetle)?
How to Get to Mineral de Pozos from San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende (check out the best things to do and see in San Miguel de Allende) is the most common city from where day excursions to Mineral de Pozos depart from although Guanajuato City (where the Momias of Guanajuato reside) and Dolores Hidalgo are also popular options.
From San Miguel de Allende, Mineral de Pozos is a 60 minute drive away. From Guanajuato City, Mineral de Pozos is 2 hours away while it is just a 60-minute drive from Dolores Hidalgo (a city located right between Guanajuato City and Mineral de Pozos). Finally, Mineral de Pozos is 60 minutes away from Queretaro City.
If you want to do a road trip from Guanajuato to Queretaro, I recommend you to begin in Guanajuato City, continue in Dolores Hidalgo, go to San Miguel de Allende and finally end in Mineral de Pozos before venturing into the Sierra Gorda of Queretaro, and then Queretaro City.
If you’re flying to Guanajuato by air, please bear in mind that visitors are required to apply for a Mexico Tourist Card online before arriving.
No matter which route you choose I hope that you’ll enjoy Mineral de Pozos as much as I did!!!
